Two-Stroke Outboard Engines for Commercial Fishing in Ghana

Two-stroke outboard engines remain familiar in Ghana’s commercial fishing sector. Their relatively simple design, strong power-to-weight characteristics and direct response can suit working boats where weight, field familiarity and straightforward operation are important. They also require disciplined fuel-and-oil preparation and regular attention to cooling and corrosion.

The best engine is not chosen by technology alone. It must match the hull, load, route, operating hours and service arrangements.

Why working boat operators use two-strokes

A two-stroke engine produces a power stroke every crankshaft revolution. In practical terms, this can provide responsive power in a compact package. Compared with many four-strokes of similar output, a conventional two-stroke can be lighter and mechanically simpler.

Those characteristics are useful where a motor may be handled regularly, installed on a fishing canoe or operated far from a large workshop. However, fuel use, oil preparation, noise and emissions should also be considered. A four-stroke may be preferred where quiet operation and fuel efficiency have greater priority and the boat can accept the weight and service requirements.

Choose horsepower from the real job

Portable 9.8HP to 20HP models can suit small fishing boats, tenders and light river work. Mid-range 25HP and 30HP models can support heavier mixed loads and commercial tasks. The 40HP class is widely associated with Ghanaian fishing canoes, while 60HP may suit larger boats and transport loads where the hull is rated and correctly set up.

These are application categories, not automatic recommendations. The boat’s rated power, hull condition, transom, normal load and operating water must be checked before selecting a motor.

Fuel and oil must follow the exact manual

Conventional two-stroke lubrication uses oil mixed with the fuel. The correct type of oil and mixing procedure are model-specific. Too little oil can cause severe engine damage; too much can lead to smoke, deposits and poor running.

Measure accurately with clean containers. Keep water and dirt out of the fuel system, close the tank correctly and avoid storing mixed fuel longer than recommended. Never copy a mixture from another engine without checking the owner’s manual for the exact model and operating period.

Cooling is critical during long hours

Commercial fishing can involve extended running and repeated starts. Check the cooling-water indicator after starting and watch for changes in flow. Sand, debris, plastic or shallow-water operation can restrict cooling.

If the motor overheats or cooling flow becomes abnormal, stop and investigate according to the manual. Continuing to run an overheating outboard can turn a small blockage into major damage.

Saltwater care protects availability

After coastal use, flush the cooling system with clean fresh water as directed. Wash salt from external surfaces without forcing water into electrical or fuel components. Inspect the propeller, anodes, fasteners and lubrication points.

Fishing line behind the propeller can damage seals, so remove the propeller for inspection when the manual or service schedule calls for it. Touch up damaged protective coatings and keep the engine stored in the recommended position.

Selecting a Seatan two-stroke

Seatan Ghana lists eight models: T9.8, E15D, T18, T20, T25, T30, T40G Enduro and T60. The range includes manual and electric starting options, tiller and remote configurations, short- and long-shaft versions, and commercial-use features on selected models.

Compare the complete Seatan model range and read the specifications for each motor. For demanding 40HP work, review the T40G Enduro product page. For portable power, compare the 9.8HP to 20HP models rather than buying only from a horsepower label.

Prepare for a dealer recommendation

Send the dealer the boat length, hull type, transom height, typical load, operating area, preferred starting method and steering arrangement. If replacing an engine, include its model, shaft length and propeller details.

JAISRI TRADING ENTERPRISE in Accra can confirm the available configuration, current price and product support. Use the Seatan Ghana enquiry form to describe the boat and daily work.

A two-stroke can be a practical commercial tool when it is correctly matched, accurately fuelled, regularly cooled and supported with proper maintenance.
